🌿 When the Garden Begins to Whisper of Fall

There is a moment every August when the garden changes.
It is still summer.
The sun is still warm. The bees are still busy. The herbs are still spilling over their beds and reaching toward the light.
But something is different.
You can feel it in the mornings.
You can see it in the plants.
Some are flowering. Some are beginning to seed. Others seem to be giving one last wild burst of growth before the season starts turning toward autumn.
And if we are paying attention, the herbs tell us what time it is.
🌿 The Garden Has Its Own Calendar
We tend to live by dates.
September means fall. December means winter. March means spring.
Plants aren't particularly interested in our calendars.
They respond to sunlight, temperature, rain, soil, insects, wind, and the place where they are actually growing.
That means late August can look completely different depending on where you live.
This is one of my favorite things about working with herbs.
They make us look.
Is the plant still putting its energy into leaves?
Has it begun flowering?
Are seeds forming?
Are the leaves beginning to change?
The plant itself gives us clues about what is happening beneath our feet and around us.

✂️ Harvesting Is More Than Cutting
There is something wonderfully old about walking outside with a basket and gathering herbs.
But harvesting isn't simply taking what we want.
It is a relationship.
We notice what is abundant.
We leave enough for the plant.
We leave flowers for bees and other pollinators.
We gather what we can actually use.
And sometimes we leave the plant completely alone.
There is wisdom in knowing when not to harvest.
🌿 Saving a Little Summer
Soon some of these herbs will be hanging to dry, tucked into jars, infused into oils, or waiting for a winter cup of tea.
And months from now, when snow covers the ground, opening one of those jars will bring August rushing back.
The scent.
The garden.
The warmth.
A little piece of summer preserved by leaf and flower.
Maybe that is one of the quiet wonders of herbs.
They connect us to the land while they are growing...
and somehow keep that connection alive long after the garden has gone to sleep.
So before summer slips away, wander outside.
Touch the leaves.
Notice what is flowering.
Watch where the bees are gathering.
See what is beginning to seed.
You don't even have to harvest anything.
Sometimes the practice is simply learning to notice.
The plants have been speaking all along.
We just have to remember how to listen. 🌿
