A Little More Being: September Is Yoga Month

2 min read

There is a moment before a practice begins when the room grows a little quieter. You set your things down. You find your place. For a breath or two, you are simply here.

That moment matters to me.

September is National Yoga Month, and I keep coming back to this: It’s not the pose—it’s who you are behind the pose.

Who arrives with you?

The part of you that has been holding everything together? The curious part? The tired part that nearly stayed home?

They all get a place here.

Yoga has roots in India and a history much wider than the shapes we make on a mat. In my teaching, movement opens a door to paying attention: to our breath, our choices, the way we speak to ourselves, and the room we make for one another.

A practice can begin quietly

Sit in a chair or settle somewhere supported. Let your eyes stay open, soften your gaze, or close them if that feels comfortable.

Notice what is holding you: the floor, the chair, the cushions beneath you. Let your breathing find its own pace. There is nothing to count or force.

If movement feels welcome, try a comfortable shoulder roll or a small stretch. If stillness feels better, stay. You get to choose.

Carry a little of it with you

Perhaps your practice follows you into the kitchen when you pause before answering a difficult message. Perhaps it is choosing rest before you have worn yourself completely out. Perhaps it is laughing when your balance wanders.

These ordinary moments are worth noticing. They are where the practice becomes part of a life.

This month, I invite you to come curious. Try a class. Return after time away. Pull up a chair. Ask for a different way to move. We can begin with who you are today.

What might you discover if you gave yourself a little more room to be?
